On Sunday, September 11, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center will present the Chicago premiere of Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Abby Ginzberg’s critically acclaimed documentary feature, BARBARA LEE: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER, an intimate, inspiring, and timely portrait of California Congresswoman Barbara Lee, a pioneer on behalf of racial and economic justice, and an outspoken advocate for reproductive rights throughout her career. In the past month, Lee has been featured in several TV interviews describing her own back-alley abortion in Mexico when she was a teenager.

The recipient of the 2022 NAACP Image award for “Outstanding Documentary,” BARBARA LEE: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER reveals how Barbara Lee has spent her life-fighting inequality and racism, uplifting the stories of those falling through the cracks, and speaking truth to power. The protests and reactions to George Floyd’s death have only elevated her visibility in Congress and the country as she has called for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to confront the legacy of slavery and racism in the U.S.

Lee recently returned from the Congressional trip to Poland and Ukraine, where members of the delegation committed to providing billions in US humanitarian and military aid in opposition to the war in Ukraine. Rep. Lee has been an outspoken advocate for reproductive rights throughout her career and in the past month. The film is both timely and timeless.
