Campy Pirates Swash and Buckle Up a Storm at Babes off Broadway

Full disclosure:I was in some of the Babes With Blades inaugural shows.  I know so much SAFD (Society of American Fight Directors) history that wasn’t always open to women so everything this company does is rooted in a deep history of telling stories that were not told and a history that at one point negated the “fighting spirit” of women unless they fought like men. 

But you don’t need any of that back story to revel in the sheer fun of their latest production yo ho. by SMJ.  It’s a queer romance novel meets burlesque meets some of the best stage combat you will see on any stage and it's right in front of you and about 10 feet away. So thrilling, yes. Carly Bell (CB) Cason should be working everywhere.  Also shout out to costume designer Jennifer Mohr who makes sure even the undies tell a story. 

Given that the historical record contains almost no verifiable facts about the actual lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, among the most famous of female pirates, theirs is a story with lots of room for artistic license.  As a matter of fact, their careers as pirates lasted 61 days, and Mary died in prison.  No one is sure what happened to Anne.  So this two hour tale of battles and piracy in the Caribbean doesn’t need to adhere to any reality except what was in the playwrights head.  And what a saucy head that be!

The five actors who tell the tale are all in: Sierra Bryn’s Mark/Mary is angsty, caught in confusion about gender having gone back and forth for survival purposes.  Rachel Sleek-Bañuelos as Anne is sexy and strategic. Stef Brundage’s  Calico Jack probably strays furthest from historical record but who knows, and he’s so much fun.  Rounding out this versatile cast who play a multitude is the beguiling Brittani Yawn and the comedic William Delforge. 

Don’t expect the plot to elucidate the complex lives of women drawn to piracy.  This show is pure entertainment and for those who love pirates and sexy cosplay this is absolute candy. Alex Kingsley’s sound design keeps the tunes moving and it’s a full burlesque evening with a deck instead of a pole.
