Sparkling revival delightfully swings at Chicago Shakes

Sheldon Epps’ reimagining of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night plot into the 1996 swing operetta Play On!  using Duke Ellington’s music is now on at Chicago Shakes at Navy Pier in a gorgeous soul stirring production. Epps himself directs this powerhouse cast, from Krystal Joy Brown as a bring-the-house down Lady Liv (Olivia) to Alan H. Green at the hysterically funny Rev- an Aguecheek with dance chops and a shocking yellow zoot suit. James Harkness as Jester is a great Toby Belch stand in with outstanding pipes.   This is a love letter to black culture and an empowering tale of women artists. It is also a wonderful piece of dance-in-your-seat, clap-along entertainment.   Hailee Kaleem Wright plays Vy Man (Viola/Cesario), and there is no actual Sebastian in this plot so she/he stays the hero. Shakespeare sticklers may chafe at the liberal reinterpretation of the plot, but let that go, and bask in the sunshine of this idealized but uplifting Harlem Renaissance. 

The music here, conducted by Theodis Rodgers Jr., is top notch. Actually,  I cannot stress enough how great the music of this show is: its Duke Ellington done lovingly full bore. And Edgar Godineaux’s choreography, including some leap from your seat fine swing numbers, is the stuff of Great White Way dreams( and kids replicating them in your living room.) 

Big shout out to costume designer An-Lin Dauber whose character illuminating period garb will send you to the vintage store for your next outfit.
