Australia’s most popular TV shows stirs in a great male love triangle amid the family travails.
I was introduced to A PLACE TO CALL HOME through the YouTube Channel – Romance Men to Men Love – one of the many channels with strips the gay material away from megahits like ‘Gray’s Anatomy’ or ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ and presents them as standalone story lines. Each bit is super short – 3 to 5 minutes – and it is a great way to keep up with queer stories on TV.
Considering a sprawling family story in Australia in the 1950s. A PLACE TO CALL HOME features a fascinating love triangle among between its hunky men. James Blygh (David Berry) is to be the inheritor of Ash Park, the family Manor. But his affection for hired hand Harry (Dominic Allburn) cannot carry on, and thus his
wedding to Olivia (Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood) is consummated. While Olivia comes to understand and accept James’ true nature, his father cannot, and James is committed for treatment, which causes memory loss. The scene where Harry again meets James – who has no memory of who he is – is a masterpiece in the unspoken.
I applaud creator Bevan Lee and the creative team behind A PLACE TO CALL HOME for being unafraid of tackling serious issues in addition to gender, including women’s health issues, poverty, and the lingering effects of war.
So eager was I to see what happened to these men, that I I got a free week of ACORN TV to watch seasons 5 and 6 in full. And I was not disappointed. Harry finds new love in Dr. Henry (Tim Draxl one of Australia’s leading out gay actors), who quite unexpectedly fathers a child.
One of Australia’s most loved and awarded TV dramas, A PLACE TO CALL HOME is just now finding its international audience. And it is a place I would be happy to visit again.
